In essence, the benefits of organic farming could also be seen as arguments PRO organic farming. So without further ado, here we go.

Organic Farming Benefits: Reduces Chemical Infiltration

Because organic farming reduces the number of chemicals used, it also reduces the amount of chemical runoff that can infiltrate the soil, water and environment. According to the USDA, only 0.8% of farmland is certified organic in America. That leaves more than 99% of farmlands that have room for improvement! Traditional farming doesn’t just pollute the immediate land on which it resides, or the workers who handle the produce.  These effects roll “downstream” per say and have long lasting effects on every human being on earth as well as their children and grandchildren.

Organic Farming Benefits: Builds Healthy Soil

Organic farming methods center around not only growing better plants and produce, but increasing the health of the farm from the ground up. Substituting organic manure and compost for harmful chemical fertilizers and rotating crops continue to renew the nutrients and positive microbial activity in the soil.  Additionally, organic farming helps enhance soil’s ability to absorb/ store carbon, hydration and nutrients.

Organic Farming Benefits: Yields Better Produce

Because the healthier soil feeds the plants in more efficient ways, the produce from these plants is, in turn, fortified with higher vitamin and mineral counts. If we are being honest, we could also go as far as to say that organic food looks and tastes better.

Organic Farming Benefits: Fosters Biodiversity

Did you know that 60-70 million birds die each year from insecticide poisoning? Many other species also suffer from the toxic effects of chemicals used in traditional farming. Even species that may not currently be endangered could end up that way if organic farming does not become the norm.  Aside from the harmful effects on the human body, the entire biosphere can be harmed by chemicals and toxins used to drive higher produce yields.

Organic Farming Benefits: Uses Less Energy

Reducing the amount of large machinery used, organic farmers reduce the amount of energy necessary for production of crops. In reducing energy usage, farmers are also helping to reduce the amount of greenhouse effect that is evident on our earth.  David Pimentel, a Cornell University professor of ecology and agriculture says, “Organic farming approaches for these crops not only use an average of 30 percent less fossil energy but also conserve more water in the soil, induce less erosion, maintain soil quality and conserve more biological resources than conventional farming does.”

Organic Farming Benefits: Produces Higher Profits for Growers

Not surprisingly, organic crops can glean a higher price in stores and therefore offers a higher profit for growers.  Because organic farming requires less use of machinery and chemicals (both costly items in farming outfits) there is reduce costs for farmers. Reduced costs, increased sales prices = increased profits. USDA studies show that this profit can be nearly triple that of a conventional farmer.

All in all, organic farming is a more well-rounded approach to food production long term.  If more efforts were put into the research of new techniques for organic farming, we would likely see even bigger yields and profit gains.
